Chancellors as a estate agent for landlords is appalling. I am with them for a year and a half. Very poor communications, their statement reports are just so user unfriendly - firstly they only come in PDF - you wont get the Excel version as they dont support it apparently, secondly every item is seperate line including VAT - hence that makes the report very busy, no common sense approach just hundreds of emails and very rarely someone will pick up a phone and call you I am about to change and terminate the contract which will mean unfortunatelly also an issue for the tenants

The Newbury branch is the WORST estate agency I have ever dealt with. They have zero care for any tenants. And do all they can to prevent you obtaining your deposit back.
I accepted to live at one of their properties after I was told that the property would be professionally cleaned before I moved in. I told them that the flat was unfit to live in and that I had asthma so the flat needed to be cleaned. They assured me that the flat would be cleaned. When i returned at the start of my tenancy I found that the flat was still very unclean and began coughing uncontrollably. I had to get the flat cleaned personally, at great expense. The company said they'd do a second clean but this was two weeks into my tenancy. This showed a high level of disorganisation and a lack of etiquette from chancellors.
They often do not respond to emails, claiming that they are too busy.
I always pay rent on time and have been more than accommodating for their lack of professionalism.
They are now trying to prevent me from obtaining my deposit back at all costs and are trying to claim money on the problems I brought up with the company prior to accepting tenancy.
The carpets were filthy on arrival and there were iron marks on them. Val Smith did not record this but did record them after I left the property and is now trying to use this to stop me getting my deposit back!
DO NOT USE THIS ESTATE AGENCY.

The rental process with Chancellors has been a completely nightmare! I had lots of problems to get my keys once I had paid the cleared funds. I had to let in your office the luggage and came back 4 times to get my keys because the person who managed this wasn't in the office to tell if the reference was ok. I had provided the contact to Chancellors having the reference 3 weeks before, and finally I had to do it by myself because nobody had contacted my employer. I made several questions to the person of Chancellors that managed my rental and most of them were unanswered. The day I received the keys, I arrived at 12 am and until 5pm I didn't get them. I was told to go away for a walk instead of waiting at the office (that was the third time I had to go to the office to get the keys), and it had no sense for me, as I couldn't buy anything without having a place to let the things. I agreed to rent the property 10 days before my movement because I really liked the house, so I didn't mind paying 10 days even though I wouldn't be there. They did the check in inventory in the day in which the agreement started, but I wasn't able to be present, and I only had 7 days to make any claim to the inventory's report. I emailed the person who managed this in Chancellor and I got no response. I also phoned her and a collegue answered me that she wasn't at the office in that moment but that she would phone me back. Of course, I had never received that call from her. The completely process has been very painful, always pursuing the agents. Maybe it was all bad luck regarding my movement, but I surely not recommend this agency to rent a property to anybody.

I dealt with Sue Shelly, Ben Stevens and Lucy Reeves on renting two properties out with yourselves. Sue started the process by running through terms and conditions and attending the properties. Ben and Lucy both did viewings to prospective tenants and also answered questions which I subsequently had. I have found the Newbury team professional and efficient but yet approachable and friendly. They strive to deliver results but also maintain the friendly and approachable atmosphere that is important for Landlords and tenants to see. They called me regularly with updates, answered all questions and worked as a team to rent out my two properties in a short period of time. I have had to pop in a couple of times recently and have always had a very warm welcome - everyone remembers your name and which properties you belong to. I have been so impressed that I recommended the service to a prospective family looking to relocate to Newbury. I only wish that they could manage my properties as well.
To sum it up they are fantastic, a winning team.
I rented out two properties but this form only allows for one property so please call if you need additional information.

With me and my flatmate living quite far from Newbury, it was quite difficult in finding a place to rent for our Placement year and somehow ended up walking into Chancellors. The only problem we found was trying to understand what we needed to sign and do in order to rent the property. There was a slight miscommunication between us and Chancellors, but that may have been perhaps of our understanding of what we needed to do. Overall, Chancellors have been great and have sorted everything out quite swiftly. They replied to emails quite swiftly and also very informative if there was any misunderstandings.

We've been trying to buy a house in Newbury for over 6 months and are fed up with Chancellors putting property up online which is already sold and advertising it as available. Once I rang to organise viewings on 6 properties, to find all but 1 was already sold. Why would a buyer want to continue advertising it(some have been up for weeks and weeks!) as available as they don't record our details to tell sellers, or get intouch if theybecome available again (as at least 2 houses have!) Also being put up online when already sold- just a waste of my phone call and my time. We joke about notbothering looking at chancellors houses as they'r never available, except most ofthe time its not a joke!
Sort it out, you seem to have the most customers locally, you don't need to waste our time with fake sales! Try being more efficient as currentlyyour practise is embarrassing!

What agent could do to change your mind?
They contract out everything - key handling, deposit handling, maintenance. They do nothing for the tenant and rip them off at every step. How to improve? Go bust and don\'t sully the high streets with your scum.

Having washed their hands of us the minute we walked into the rental property in Newbury, we had to chase the landlord to get the gas connected and fix the lack of water pressure (couldn't have a shower). They harrassed us with threatening letters towards the end of the tenancy even though we'd paid the rent in advance for the last remaining few weeks (no polite query for payment, straight to legal threats, despite having already paid them). They then charged us over £100 for a check out service....err, hang on we were charged for a check in service too. So, the next tenants ALSO got charged a check in service as the same inventory clerk told me he loves them because he gets paid twice for the same work. They then lost the keys and let new tenants move in to the property and passed the blame to us for not having passed on the keys. The check out was signed by THEIR clerk who took a photo of said keys. The deposit was disputed - BY THEM - not the landlord. Then the landlord jumped in to relcaim some losses that she'd been charged by them. They stole the interest that would have been paid out by the deposit protection agency but they put a clause in our contract so that they could. THEY SIMPLY DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE and just find new ways to screw money out of tenants and londlords. Truly the worst agent I've ever come across. Avoid at all costs.

They oversold and under delivered on all accounts, my property was marketed for months without any real success, the only advice was to drop the price...the exact same size property (and similar condition) was marketed by my friend in the same block and sold at a much higher price without using an agent. The property management is subpar, they sent a unqualified plumber to fix a leak, and sent me an invoice for the change of shower head and a recommendation to send a plumber as the fix couldn't be fixed, only when I disputed the invoice did they tell me their contractor was unqualified. I have issues most months with the property management service, I deal with my tenant directly and she has asked me if there was any way I could remove them from the chain as they are don't do anything for either the tenant or me. My advice would be to avoid and find a reputable local agent.

Customer service needs to be seriously looked at in this company. There are so many problems I would not know where to start with how they can improve!
I have said all I want to in the comments section above.
I don't want to name any names so I have left the staff members details out. I do not believe the problem to be the staff, I think the fundamental ethos of the company is wrong so no one person to blame. In fact certain members of staff have been useful.
I instructed Chancellors to manage my property last year whilst I was travelling around Europe. I have had no end of trouble since the day they started.
The property management is outsourced to a central company in Bracknell which I believe is a massive problem. They are corporate and therefore call me mrs allen instead of a more friendly approach which I would prefer.
They never emailed me any information about problems and I had to chase them constantly to find out what was going on. I have had so many problems with them I do not know where to begin! I will highlight two that dragged in the longest. I visited the property to collect some things and noticed the tenants were not using the alarm system. On further inspection I noticed it said it needed a service. I sent an email to Chancellors asking they arrange a service. No reply, I chase. Oh yes no problem they say they will sort. Still no service was arranged some 3 months later despite countless other emails telling me they would arrange it. The alarm being used is part of the conditions of my insurance therefore they were seriously jeopardising my property.
My tenants moved out in July and I received a letter in the post telling me that they had not paid for their last months rent and this was the second reminder letter that was sent to them. I was not even aware that they had not paid, not being informed at all!
I served them notice in April to terminate the contract which they would not let me leave early despite my massive problems with their service level therefore this ended in July. In this time there was a leak at the property which they took some £1500 from me to repair. These works to date have not been done and I have only just had a refund because I have threatened legal action. I am still owed circa £500 and I am following the official complaints process as set out by ARLA.
I would NOT recommend this company to anyone and in fact would advise that you steer well clear!
