I am a private seller and based on initial meetings with three agents, selected Jeffries to sell my property in Portsmouth. I have three key observations / shortcomings (two of which have been mentioned by reviewers previously):
1. Not mentioned in any conversations or emails prior to signing, is the fact that the small print in their T&C document states that any termination period can only commence at the END of the initial contract period. When I discovered that the different members of staff were telling me completely different stories about prospective buyers (sincerity, readiness / intention to proceed and so on) and I eventually lost faith in anything they were telling me, I choose to move to another agent. Jeffries countered with: 'you cannot leave us you are under contract'; 'it is standard for notice periods to start at the end of a contract'; 'we have found you a buyer so contractually you cannot terminate' and so on. When I pointed out that I had not even been asked to sign the contract, the strong rhetoric faded to 'oh, we will let you go then...'. I checked other agents T&C documents; I can find no others that ADD the notice period to the end of the contract - this does not seem legally credible / reasonable.
2. My hint at Jeffries real character (revealed as I left them) has been amplified since then (May 2014). They have left my property as 'Sold' on Rightmove and despite several phone calls and promises from junior staff - to investigate and get back to me - no action has been taken and not a single courtesy phone call to let me know the status with this erroneous listing. Of course, prospective buyers are less likely to call my new agent if they see a dual listing and the property as 'sold'. I have called several times to ask to speak with the manager, Adam Redman, who mysteriously vanishes every time I call. Needless to say, Adam was calling me every few hours in the run up to me leaving Jeffries.
3. I am about to involve the Ombudsman to review operations at Jeffries. I do not yet know whether (as another reviewer wrote) the culture is unprofessional from the top down, or whether it is simply a case of a 'bad apple' in the case of Adam Redman, but certainly not a single one of my polite emails has been replied to. I have other properties to sell in Portsmouth and I am staggered that a branch manager of an independent chain, does not have the basic business sense and courtesy to reply to any customer or former customer's emails.
If you want a straight forward, professional agent, my advice is to leave Jeffires well alone. And just in case they claim otherwise, no I am not a competing agent (!) I am a male aged 50, living in Esher in Surrey, with a professional career behind me.
What agent could do to change your mind?
I have written to the agent with detailed feedback previously. All I wanted was integrity.

By far the worst experience I have ever had with a letting agent. From day one we have been reporting issues with the house for little to be done about it. After 5 months a slight improvement to sort things but still never fully dealing with the issues or taking responsibility. We had carpet moth issues from the start of tenancy, mould, damp, leaks in both chimney breasts, blocked pipes and toilets that were left blocked for the first two days off us living there. Ross who dealt with the issues downplayed everything and had a very arrogant attitude towards us. I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren't telling the landlord the truth about the ongoing issues. Ross also took upon himself to allow himself around every room in the house whilst we were out and without permission. The only upside about this rental was the final straw of problems caused by a contractor of there’s that made the house unliveable installing a loft hatch that went horribly wrong allowing us to surrender our contract and move out. Do yourself a favour and use a different agent.

Last week I booked to view a property on the 24th Aug. The day before the viewing I saw online that the property said 'let confirmed' so I emailed to check. No response. I travelled to Portsmouth specifically for the viewing so am quite frustrated, especially as I paid for travel for the day.

Fast, Efficient and Great Service. I can only give a feedback from the tenant perspective, although they probably are not much different in other areas (judging by comments from other people) Straight to the point, today before 15:00 I reported that there is a lot of water coming out from the main pipe from the toilet. Jenny who I've spoken to ignored this completely saying that there is similar issue in different property so someone will come in to have look at this Tomorrow! As there is no other toilet to use I've asked what should i do in this case till tomorrow? She suggested to use the toilet anyway (even though everything was coming out of it every time I flushed ) or collect the water ! (which wouldn't be even possible because the pipe practically is on the floor level)
I can't even think how people like that are still employed ...

Only two people that seems like they know what they are doing are Jack and Michael who are very good. I will review again if I see any improvement.

Second viewing was much better and I rang up to secure the property after the weekend only to be told that the landlord won't accept pets (we have a blind house rabbit). Although the lad I spoke to went back and asked the landlord, I'm completely bewildered as to why we were shown the property in the first place? When they signed us up initially we explained the situation so as to prevent this happening so why would we then be shown the place. The landlord declined our request as he had another offer so our time was completely wasted. Bear in mind we are hoping to move county so each viewing takes us a couple of hours there and back, and we have nothing to show for it. Thank you Jeffries, for your complete and utter disinterest in potential tenants. We will not be using for the current let, nor for the purchase of a property that we are currently saving for.

What agent could do to change your mind?
Been reasonable regarding the obvious deceit involved when proving the previous cleaning of the flat. Been truthful about what they actually felt during the checkout procedure rather than saying everything was fine then charging us.
Comments on Agent Fees
Ridiculous end of contract fees and paperwork fees with VAT added onto everything.

Claire from Jeffries then went on to send proof of cleaning from before we moved in despite our inventory specifying all of the dirt that was in the flat. Incredibly sneaky and deceitful and we were treated as though we were criminals when we caused no damage to the property or had any issues for our whole stay. They also would not give us the landlords details so that we could discuss the issue with them. I really hope no one uses Jeffires as a landlord, seller, buyer or tennant in the future so you don't get scammed too!

I've been a private landlord since 2006 and after a bad experience with a major chain I've generally undertook all letting myself. However, there have been two instances where I've not had the time to let my properties myself, and on these occasions in 2010 and 2012 I've instructed Jeffries. I went for the finders-only service and the fee was very competitive, especially considering it includes all the tenant referencing. They took on board all my requirements and got my listing live within 24 hours. Both times my property had multiple offers and let agreed the following day and they kept me informed all the way through the process without me having to chase. I was so impressed second time round I even sent them a box of chocolates, they'd saved me so much time. The next time a tenant moves out I won't hesitate to instruct Jeffries again to take care of letting my property, it's easily worth their fee in terms of saving my time and they've demonstrated their competence and abilities.

These cowboys in my view are anything but professional, and have no concept about the importance of honouring promises and maintaining good customer relationships. The rules are simple - IF YOU CAN'T DELIVER, DON'T COMMIT, and IF YOU MESS UP, DEAL WITH IT DON'T RUN AND HIDE.
I wouldn't use them again if my life depended on it.

This is clearly a rival agent writing a poor review to attempt to damage us. The language used makes it very obvious.
Jeffries sell dramatically more properties than any agent in the North End...
