Took a short let for a 5 week break on London. Huge mistake. They advertise short let as a way to stay over hotels or air bnb.
Firstly the apartment lacked most basic necessities such as microwave or any cleaning tools or supplies. They supply nothing, we had to purchase pots pans, broom, vacuum bags soap etc.
Secondly, constant phone calls and emails from agents wanting to show the property to other future tennants whilst we were there. Very disturbing and annoying.
Third, we left the apartment clean but with the towels and sheets to be washed, they charged £558. A 2 bedroom apartment with 1 king and 1 double bed.
Beware of Foxtons short let, they will rip you off.
Foxtons have since offered us a small discount on the laundry charge. And a slap in the face by accusing us of being unclean-failing to wash our bedsheets (which in fact we did twice through our tenancy).
Here is our experience in summary.
Whilst negotiating the short stay with the agent we were assured we would have all of the amenities and necessities for a short stay. This is also advertised on the Foxtons website. We were not told at any time that we would have to allow multiple viewings per week, or field constant emails and calls from agents who were eager to organise these sessions.
When we arrived at the apartment, we were disappointed to find:
- No dish cleaning supplies at all.
- The cushions on the sofa had a terrible odour so we had to wash the covers.
- No rubbish bin
- Only 1 tea towel (a request for any more tea towels was denied)
- No microwave (this was especially inconvenient with a 1.5 year old baby)
- No clothes airer to hang wet clothes or clothes dryer
- No iron or ironing board
- No broom, brush or pan
- No toilet brush
- No toilet paper
- The toilet seat was broken and moved aside every time it was used
- Very few cooking utensils
- Scratched Teflon saucepans
- No ice tray
- No vacuum cleaner bags (Vacuum had 1 bag which was as hard as concrete and smelled sickening, it must have been in there for at least 12 months unchanged). We informed the agent and she suggested that we should have emptied and retained the bag. It was most likely toxic but goes to show the respect they offer their clients.
-1 set of bed linen per bed (supposed to be 2). We had to wash and dry the sheets in 1 day, so that was a trip to the laundromat.
- Both bedside light globes were blown (a request for replacement was completely ignored).
We emailed (our contact) 3 days after arriving to request some of these items. The only action ever taken was that we received a rubbish bin.
Most emails were ignored or took days to be answered and none (bar the rubbish bin) were acted upon.
We agreed to a £250 clean organised through Foxtons to ensure they would be satisfied with the clean rather than organise our own clean.
Only the bed sheets and pillow cases, 1 tea towel and 4 bath towels and 2 bath mats towels were left for laundry.
How is that not included in a £250 clean, then to charge an additional £258 for laundry, how is that justified?
We left the apartment neat and tidy and in the same condition as arrival. The cleaning would not need to have been extensive.
We would have let sleeping dogs lie, but to then be charged a further £258 was a step too far.
