I am writing this review as a previous landlord of a property that New Era Agency In Portsmouth Southsea was hired to manage. I need to warn any possible landlords even thinking of having their property managed by New Era to do yourself a favour and stay away. They allowed our property to be totally trashed twice in 4 years and took no responsibility their negligence. It has cost us thousands of pounds to clean and redo the house. So along with the mess and damage we did not get regular inspection reports, we would send emails and no reply. The rent was so far in arrears and they did nothing. It was a nightmare! How they are still in business is beyond comprehension. We fired them and moved on to a real management company. This was our experience and is a warning to you.

Absolutely awful. The branch manager was very unprofessional and got quite annoyed when I called him out on issues that were unsatisfactory. Moved my daughter into student housing yesterday. Room was absolutely filthy yet it was apparently cleaned. Broken and substandard furniture. He blamed last years students for trashing the house - not sure this is relevant for this years students! Apparently the landlord didn't make any profit last year ? Yes I know they are students but certain standards of cleanliness and furniture should be expected.

I am masters student and have rented many houses in Portsmouth with many different estate agents but new era are by far the worst! Seemed alright at first but when it comes to getting the deposit, they try claim for things that are unreasonable, luckily enough i went through the deposit protection scheme and was able for to get the deposit back but otherwise would have lost the majority of the deposit.

This is the worst agency ever! Do not go to them if you are looking to rent! They treat you like crap! As soon as you give your notice they are on your back constantly! I have always left properties in a good clean condition when I have moved. New era treats you like you are lying and for some reason think you want to leave the house in a mess...hello I actually want my deposit back! The decided to do an inspection2 weeks before we were due to leave...then complained the house was not tidy! I told them a day before they came round we were packing and there were boxes everywhere! Waste of everyone's time! Now they are constantly ringing and sending letters to remind me! I'm not thick and I'm not a child....I know what needs to be done and I would have more time to do it if they stopped hounding me! I have never had this experience before....so not let through them they are absolutely pathetic!

When we do a pre-check out inspection the aim is always to try to be helpful so as to expedite the speedy return of the deposit, nothing more and nothing less. Jul 21, 2017THEY ARE THE WORST. I am shocked on how horrible to treat students, I feel like I've been rubbed. They all nice to your face but once you're leaving them they will take advantage of you BADLY. I and my friends left the house in perfect condition and they ended up complaining about little things and kept saying the houses wasn't cleaned well enough! I promise you the house was perfectly fine. They took a HUGE amount of our deposit which they said will go towards a cleaner and towards them. They are so unfair and dealt with the situation badly. ALL THEY WANT IS MONEY. They are super rude and have caused so much stress not only for me but my family too. Honestly, do not go with them I've never felt so violated in my life. -New Era Agency Portsmouth -The property lived in: 59 Hudson Road

My housemates and I had an AWFUL experience with this agency. Throughout the year they were generally very slow at coming to fix repairs with the house. Towards the end of the academic year, they became increasingly slow to fix any problems, alongside failing to uphold their promises to us such as new sets of drawers for a few of the bedrooms. Just before moving out, a member of staff from this agency performed a check round the house with us and advised us on what things we need to do in order to gain all of our deposits back, including things such as cleaning the skirting boards and covering over any marks on the walls with a little paint. When moving out, the house was in very good order and all things that were asked of us were done. A few months later, the agency then contact us to inform us we will only be getting £40 EACH of the £400 EACH we all paid initially. £800 of this due to 'paint work' and failed to specify the rest of the break down costs. Very angered by this, we tried to get in touch with New Era to find out where the paint work was required, why it would cost £800, and where the other money from our deposits was going. New Era failed to respond to this over the course of a few WEEKS, despite many emails being sent to persist with this issue. Still left with no real answer from this agency, we have now lost the majority of our deposits and feel very victimised. DO NOT USE THIS AGENCY.

What agent could do to change your mind?
Do not make tenants feel like they are second calss citizens because they rent! If you take decent rent then you shoud at least provide works that need doing in a reasonable time scale!

I would not ordinarily leave comments on a site like this but I wanted to just say how pleased we are with the service we receive as Landlords. We own a house in Portsmouth which we bought specifically to rent out - we had never done this before, this was our first dip into the world of rental as a landlord, having only ever been tenants most of our lives - I telephoned several agents to enquire about fees and to ask what was involved. Most seemed totally disinterested but New Era spent more than 20 minutes explaining to me the various legal aspects, particularly because our house would be considered an HMO - I had no idea what this meant at the time. I was persuaded by their local knowledge and we signed up. Within a few days the house had rented at full asking price. That was nearly 3 years ago and we have never once had a problem.OK, much of that could be because we stumbled on great tenants (which is a major factor) but we are really pleased with the service we get. One lady in the office has been there more than 40 years, I think that speaks volumes. Take notice all of you other agents in Portsmouth & Southsea - visit New Era and take a leaf out of their book for customer service. I do not work for New Era nor know anyone from New Era as a friend - in fact i pay them each month so I am certainly not promoting them for any other reason than they are genuinely good people. 5*****

We rented with new era for a year and found them more than helpful and quick to respond to any problems that arose. Rory and David were both extremely pleasant to deal with and the family run atmosphere of the agency did make the relationship with them feel a lot more personal than with a larger agency. Kindly note that legally, letting agents need to publish information about their tenancy fees, government-approved redress schemes and client money protection schemes on their website and on third party websites (on which agents are listed). For properties to lease/rent in England, agents need to keep this information up to date and precise on allAgents or specify within the property description.
