We are sorry to hear about your situation and completely empathise when something as important as heating fails and the importance of a speedy resolution. Unfortunately in cases where an outside contractor is involved, which in this case is British Gas, we are heavily reliant on their service. What agent could do to change your mind?
If this agent was truthful in negotiations about the Landlords religious convictions about gay people, we would have been happy to pull out early. We gave then 2 opportunities early enough for this. Yet both times we were assured that the Landlord was totally OK with us being gay. Obviously this was not the case. From where we were standing it appeared that the landlord was looking for any conceivable loophole to get us off the contract without being incriminated.

Kindly note that legally, letting agents need to publish information about their tenancy fees, government-approved redress schemes and client money protection schemes on their website and on third party websites (on which agents are listed). For properties to lease/rent in England, agents need to keep this information up to date and precise on allAgents or specify within the property description.
