Awful, awful experience with Letters of Distinction in York. Wouldn't recommend them even if you were desperate for a property to let. We let a property a few years ago, and we were told that our security bond would be held by them (rather than the main one most agencies use - in hindsight should have questioned this), and that it was fully secure as they would come to the property when we left with the landlord to ensure all of our bond was provided back if we met the standards. One year into our rental, we were rang by the agency and told our landlord was selling our apartment. We were offered to move to another in the building, and assured that because it was the same building just a different number (and an identical apartment), they simply would change the number on our tenancy agreement, and everything would still stand as it was. As a first time tenant, I presumed this was fine. The documents were sent through the post - the ones we had originally signed - with our new number on it. When we moved out a year later due to relocating, we left the apartment spotless beyond words, cleaning it for a full day to ensure we got the deposit back. We contacted the agency to ensure they were coming over, but couldn't get hold of anyone over the phone, and emails went ignored. Eventually someone said the landlord was coming over. He came over as we were leaving, checked everything over and said everything was fantastic, and thanked us. The agency however, did not show up. Three weeks later, our deposit wasn't yet returned, so I contacted the agency. We were told that our "safe" deposit had been handed to the landlord when we moved apartments, despite them saying this wasn't the case. £800 of our money, in his hands. As you can imagine, we had a month of hell. He ignored our calls, suddenly the apartment had been left a tip and accused us of stealing things (!!!!), and breaking stuff. It was insane, and very upsetting. We were furious with the agency, who stopped answering our calls. They LIED to us, and left us with a landlord from hell who had our £800. He ended up giving us £500, claiming for 'cleaning costs and damages'. It was a joke; nothing was broken, but we had no proof otherwise. Was very tempted to go to a small claims, but it caused to much distress, we just left it. DO NOT LET WITH THIS AGENCY; let my words stick to you like glue if you consider them. You will regret it. We never got an apology from them.
