I was interested in renting a studio or a 1 bedroom flat, and I had seen a flat I was interested in,online, in Earls court, published by Interlet. So I rang up the agency, and asked them when I could arrange a viewing. They first asked me when I was thinking of moving in, and I said by the end of july. They then said that the property I was interested in was available immediately and that I were to view it asap or else it would be gone in a couple of days. The next day, I decided to make a visit to interlet to arrange an appointment to view some flats and also to see the ones that were on offer (Little did I know, that you had to pay £120 quids UPFRONT to register, and that without payment I could not view any of the flats they offered). Upon my arrival in Interlet, I was not greeted by any of the three agents present. I was then introduced to Victoria. I told her i was looking for a studio flat that wasn't too expensive in the area of Kensington, and she kept on showing me studio flats worth 700-800 pounds a month, which was way over my budget. She then started showing me the cheap studio flats available, which were very small and unattractive, to which I said I was not interested, she then replied annoyed "but the other ones are more expensive". I tried to explain to her, that as a prospective customer, I was there to find a flat I liked within my budget, and that it would have been a waste of money renting a studio that I did not like. She then asked me when I was thinking of moving in. I told her that I am a student, to which she responded that landlords need a 6 month deposit from students, something I never heard of!!! (Luckily I had read about scam agencies and what to look out for, and I vividly recommend, to anyone who s having a first time experience in letting agencies like me).
She said that she had a couple of flats available in june but many of the ones I had seen, were available immediately. So I said that I was interested to view one or two flats she had shown me available end of june. What came next was even more disturbing. A piece of paper was put infront of me, with a chart for property viewing appointments and on the back, a contract with the term and conditions of the agency to sign. She told me that I had to pay 120 quids BEFORE being able to view properties, in other words, I was paying for a service that I had no idea how it would have been like. She then said i had to read the terms and conditions before signing, to which I asked if I could have a copy of the contract to bring home with me, so that I could read it in my own time. However, Victoria, said she couldn t provide me a copy of the contract and that the terms and conditions were stated on their official website. Luckily, I followed my gut feeling and did not pay.
Although, this was a brief experience with Victoria, I had explained to her it was my first time using a letting agency and that I didn t want to rush things, though she kept on pressurizing on how the properties would vanish if i waited too long. What I thought were just my first impressions of her in half an hour, were actually correct, as I ve read reviews of other customers saying she is too stuck up and snob. Also, when you first call in, there is a registered voice saying that the call is registered for training purposes... don t think there is any actual training going on and if there is... you re doing it wrong, customers should feel welcome and respected at all times.
