Myself and my housemate rented a property through Dwell Estate Agents and I would like to let everybody know what a terrible experience we had dealing with them.
I must admit that everything went fairly smoothly with the move in process (around 2 and a half years ago). Following the move we dealt directly with our landlord throughout the tenancy. He managed any issues very well and we had no difficulties with him.
However, once we gave notice to our landlord we had to deal with Dwell Estate Agents again. The problems started when they called to make an appointment to take photos of the property for advertising purposes. We were very obliging and arranged to stay in to grant them access. Despite making an appointment, they did not show up and did not communicate with us at all. This happened on several occasions. When arranging viewings we had a similar story. At times they did not show up to arranged appointments and at other times they showed up unannounced and let themselves in to our house without prior agreement. I believe this is illegal.
Once we had moved out and agreed with the landlord that we would get our deposit returned it took 6 months to receive the deposit from Dwell Estate Agents. Both myself and my housemate spent hours trying to get hold of Harj, which seemd to be impossible. We left countless voice messages on his mobile phone and messages with his colleagues at the office, but he would not call us back. On speaking to the manager (Sam Hall) we were advised to attempt to call Harj from other phone numbers, which implies he may have been deliberately ignoring our phone calls! This is extremely unprofessional. Eventually, after informing them I would be taking legal action we finally received our deposit money. I do not understand what they were gaining from withholding this money as it was protected by the deposit protection service (DPS).
Overall I have found Dwell Estate Agents to be wholly disorganised and unprofessional with the worst communication skills I have experienced. I will not be dealing with then again and will be recommending that everybody does everything they can to avoid them. Sadly I know that in the current rental climate competition is fierce to secure a property so it is not easy to choose a reputable company to deal with.
What agent could do to change your mind?
Improve communication skills
Keeping appointments that have been made
Returning deposit in good time
