Connells were very unhelpful and rude to myself and two housemates this November - December when trying to rent a property. I work in customer service myself and would be fired for half the things Connells did to us. Here are some of the problems we had with them:
We were refused a request to speak to the landlord about general inquiries.
We were accused of lying about our jobs when there was a mistake in the reference check.
We had to pay unexpected charges for a guarantor check even though this was never mentioned before we signed the contract.
Our agent Kat was almost always off work sick or on a day off, sometimes for up to four days in a row.
After travelling over 30 miles to the office to speak to Simon, another agent, about our concerns he clearly didn't want to speak to us and was desperately trying to fob us off.
Simon was also incredibly rude to us when i expressed how dissatisfied i was with the service and lengthy procedure time, stating that if we weren't happy with the service, he would find other tennants for the property who would be.
Simon was also very condescending and uncaring when we explained that the procedure needed to speed up or we would miss the deadline and have to pay another £50 in charges for their slow work.
Questions were answered cryptically if at all and we were heavily encouraged to sign the final contract before we were even sure we would be able to move in (which would have resulted in a massive charge if we couldn't find a guarantor).
Kat was very unorganised and had to be reminded more than 4 times to send out emails and documentation.
Were given no advice or help from Connells when we had trouble finding a guarantor that met their ridiculously strict reference requirements (i have rented 2 houses previously and have never needed to provide such irrelevant information).
It felt as if they couldn't be bothered to do their job properly and expected us to do it ourselves or give up - however they still responded to us just in case we managed to do it ourselves so they could collect their commission.
With 9 days left before the move in date we again asked to speak to the landlord and explain why things were taking so long and how difficult Connells were being and were refused.... It's a miracle we even managed to move in and we were incredibly close to walking away.
My advice would be to avoid Connells like the plague, it is disgustingly bad service and has some of the most unprofessional members of staff i have ever seen. Kat should be retrained immediately and Simon should be disciplined by management for sharp tongue and uncaring attitude.
What agent could do to change your mind?
Quit the job or retrain.
