For months, Barrie Alderton was fine. We had unknowingly rented a property with neighbours from hell, but that wasn't their fault. When it came time to move, however, the level of grief and spite that suddenly appeared was completely necessary and unprofessional - after all, while they might have to do some paperwork to get new tenants, here is an opportunity to rake in all the admin fees and whack the rent up, not to mention the fact that it is kind of their job to let properties.
Before giving notice we informed the landlord, who was lovely. BA's reaction was somewhat different. They made every single step of trying to move out a headache. The paperwork we were sent was wrong, they lied about sending it several times before actually sending it, during which time they were refusing to give us a reference for our new flat (up until the day before, so we nearly lost it and the fees we'd paid there). We had repeated phone calls from the referencing company saying they'd had extremely frustrating reactions when trying to get the reference, to the extent that they eventually suggested viewing copies of bank statements and bypassing BA completely. Over the next few weeks, the landlord had to intervene repeatedly from abroad to ask them to let us go, even though we were told this had been personally arranged for us by the landlord within days of giving notice. The staff were rude to us or ignored us. The terms of getting our deposit back was changed (which surely isn't legal, but when I tried to broach the subject I was ignored), and we had to jump through untold hoops, produce countless unnecessary documents and suffer a headache that went on for several weeks.
Perhaps this is standard procedure at Barrie Alderton, but it was disappointing after previous pleasant, friendly service, especially given that there were difficult personal circumstances surrounding the move. Perhaps if we'd informed them the reason we so desperately wanted to get away from the area with no fuss was down to a sexual assault that happened there, things would've been different, but I don't think you should have to extenuating circumstances to be treated reasonably.
If I was a landlord, I would avoid BA like the plague. As a renter, it could go either way.
What agent could do to change your mind?
Following the necessary procedure to move out is fine. Being treated with spite, having the referencing people phoning us upset and being deliberately difficult should be left in the playground.
