Horrible experience! This agency made us feel like we were worth nothing.
We have been renting for over 8 years with help of several different agencies in England. This was our first experience with Chancellors, and hopefully the last. The agents we dealt with at the branch in Headington, Oxford, were the most disrespectful people we have ever dealt with while looking for a property to rent. We have always been considered as desirable tenants, with vast experience, excellent references and well documented history of several years of long-term renting in London and Oxford. Being married and well-paid, working full time professionals, we never had any problems renting properties. We might not be born English, but we are both literate and fairly fluent English speakers. The agent was very unfriendly and dismissive during our phone conversations. Maybe that was because Chancellors never called us as promised, and we had to "chase" them for information, probably ending up looking pushy and really annoying. Or maybe because we had problems with understanding and filling up their unclear, very detailed and largely irrelevant paperwork (i.e. we had to provide forwarding address for AFTER tenancy contact mail upfront, so at least 12 months in advance, BEFORE we were even accepted by the landlord!). Although we placed an offer on the property we liked, thus showing our serious intentions, nothing has changed. We still had to call and chase them, and every time we spoke to the agent, we were left feeling like a waste of their time, as there were "several other offers" on the property. During one of those calls I was told by an agent "It is a very competitive market and these times are very busy for rentals, so you have to expect that". Well, but it should not be an excuse for someone who is supposed to have a decent customer service manners, for being patronising, unhelpful and dismissive.
Maybe just a bit "intolerant" as well?
What agent could do to change your mind?
Agents should be helpful, respectful, have a decent human understanding and patience, as well as some good customer service manners. In today's world I believe this is a really basic requirement.
