We were selling our house through O'Riordan Bond and initially were pleased as we had a prospective buyer very quickly. However, it took over 3 months for us to come to an actual sale agreement (bearing in mind there was no chain either side!) and we felt hounded by our estate agent. There were calls approx. 3-4 times a day, and we were being beaten down on price & extras for the buyer. I completely understand that their job is to get the best deal, but seriously, they did not understand the word 'no'. It felt like we were not paying for a service to assist us but to assist the potential buyer. This caused an unbelievable amount of stress and sleepless nights. Unfortunately the house we found to buy then happened to be with the same estate agent, and although we knew the sellers we had to go through the agents. It's incredible to find out how many lies can be told when the sale was so straight forward as we had already agreed a price directly with the seller! We had to ask for 2 of the agents to only contact us through our solicitor as they were hounding & bullying us again into making decisions that were completely unreasonable. We were under absolutely no time frame to make decisions and they kept telling us we only had 24 hours! We were in the middle of a 6 month lease and they would not have been allowed to show any other prospective buyers around without our permission but kept threatening that people were lined up to buy even though they hadn't seen the house the whole time we were there! I would not advise this estate agent to sell houses at all.
What agent could do to change your mind?
They could have been more honest and told us the actual position we were in with the house, rather than emailing me on a Friday at 5.30pm scare-mongering me for a whole weekend into thinking we had to make an instant decision on whether to purchase the house. We actually had at least 4 weeks before they were able to market the property because we were in the middle of a tenancy agreement. Then the inpersonal telephone calls that were bullying & stressful made the whole process incredibly tough. This was completely unnecessary as all the decisions on price, time scale etc had been agreed by us directly with the seller and all of us including our solicitors were satisfied with the progress.
At no point did I feel like the estate agents were working with me, but were always fighting hard for the other side, when I'm not even sure that the other people wanted them to do it. Try some customer service next time please. If this was a shop or a service you can cancel half-way through the process I would definitely have done it but unfortunately they completely have you locked in with their contracts.
