Terrible experience dealing with Harmes Turner Brown, Walton on Thames branch (HTB).
The house I rented was advertised as freshly renovated, boasting new carpets, but reality couldn't have been further from the truth. Upon moving in, I was confronted with a disturbing revelation: the house had not been cleaned, and it was filled with debris and grime. The attempt at patchy painting on a couple of walls left much to be desired, and filler dust seemed to be everywhere. HTB, as the property agent, had a clear responsibility to ensure that minimum standards were met before renting out any property. Unfortunately, in this instance, they made no effort whatsoever to ensure that the house was handed over in a reasonable condition.
Before moving in, I had raised several concerns related to the safety of our infant child with HTB, but their response left much to be desired. Regrettably, the landlord showed no willingness to address any of these concerns.
Upon inspecting the property, we encountered a repugnant odour emanating from the fridge, with the freezer section covered in solid ice. The box freezer in the garage also emitted an unpleasant odour and was covered in mould. These issues had already been documented in the inventory check-in report before our move-in. The fridge is currently unusable, leading to the disposal of all perishable food items, including crucially reserved baby milk. The freezer poses a health hazard as well. I requested that HTB communicate with the landlord regarding the replacement of the fridge, given its critical importance to our needs. Shockingly, the landlord flatly refused to repair or replace the fridge, insisting that we bear the cost of fixing or replacing it, along with any potential future breakdowns during our tenancy.
To add to our concerns, our 8-month-old baby, who suffers from dust allergies, could not be brought into a house in such a deplorable state. My wife and I spent several days painstakingly cleaning and scrubbing the property before deeming it safe for our child. Notably, the carpet in the landing area remains heavily soiled and impervious to our cleaning efforts. Astonishingly, the landlord has rejected our request for carpet cleaning.
These issues represent only a fraction of the problems plaguing the property, and we anticipate further resistance from the landlord in addressing them. This experience stands out as the most challenging I've faced as a tenant, especially considering that I had offered to pay above the asking price. A clean property and the provision of basic essentials for comfortable living should be the absolute minimum expectations.
Since taking possession of this house in Hersham, it has been a constant source of stress, and HTB has provided no assistance in addressing any of the glaring issues with the landlord's barrage of discrimination. They appear extremely unsupportive of their tenants and seem to prioritize the landlords' interests over the tenants'. This has been an utterly dreadful experience.
