Terrible experience. Be warned and avoid. This was my first experience selling a property and Sharman Quinney, and Adam Tanswell in particular, were a nightmare to deal with. It started out with a few small warning signs as Adam came to our home and he seemed a bit pushy, but we went ahead with advertising our property with them – if only we’d gone with our instincts and not assumed all agents are like this.
After an initial 2 weeks with 4 viewings (none of which came to anything), things cooled off very quickly. We went several weeks with few viewings or communication and had to push them for updates. After 6 weeks we were getting really disheartened and asked if we could give 30 days’ notice and give someone else a go (Adam made it clear when we met, we could give 30 days’ notice to end the contract). Their response was to send excerpts from the contract highlighting that 30 days could only be given after week 25!! And if we advertised with anyone else their fees would go up considerably and they would try to block any sale independent of them or seek their inflated fees on top.
It was a really intimidating and stressful time, they should have tried to address our concerns and offered advice and reassurance rather than point to the contract points in their favour.
We got advice to take it to an ombudsman who would be very concerned by such a long length of contract and poor terms, but despite this we waited out the 25 weeks to be free. We received more no shows than viewings (few of either) and towards the end of the contract they tried to pressure is into selling to a property developed for well under the asking price.
To make matters worse, once the contract ended, they sent us a bill for £150 for their advertising and requested we pay it within 3 days. Ironically, we couldn’t get any reply from Adam or Mike Sharman when we wanted advice towards the and of the contract, and they were slow to respond to requests to remove our ads after the contract ended – but quick to send us this bill and request immediate payment (twice in two days). There are plenty of much better agents out there, and we’ve had a much better experience now we’re with someone else. Avoid Sharman Quinney and Adam Tanswell.
