If I could give zero stars, I would. Make sure you’re rigorous with inventories and records.
They firstly messed us around with bills - told us to sign up to “Tilli”, our sign up didn’t go through, they then informed us that we actually had to pay our electrical bill to them. They refused to invoice us, we never received a receipt or an actual amount we had to pay. Just someone on the other end of the phone quoting a number. We still don’t know if the amount we were asked for was completely legitimate.
Not the worst part though. Upon move out they claimed we owed a greater amount than our deposit in mostly bogus fees. A cleaning fee we’re happy to pay, that’s unfortunately standard renting. A fabricated £600 “missing rent fee”, we were not. We took it to the deposit holding scheme and after many months we won the case, as we obviously did not owe rent. We also were quoted a missing electric bill, which we were happy to pay, we just wanted a receipt! They were unable to even produce an invoice/evidence of how much we had to pay for the holding scheme. The deposit holding scheme did not make us pay this full electric bill.
They do not answer their phones, or emails. Our shower broke in our last week there and they didn’t get it fixed in time for the new tenant moving in, she moved in to a broken shower and they didn’t even think to notify her, and they were still trying to contact us about the repairs weeks after we’d moved out.
They refused to undertake legally required electric work, required due to the age of the building. This endangers tenants.
The actual apartment was extremely poor quality, walls peeling, carpet at least 10 years old (they tried to charge us to clean it at the end of the tenancy), bathroom falling apart, linoleum coming up. We lived there out of desperation for a roof over our heads in an awful time. They had no sympathy when we had to move out due to my mother’s death during the Covid pandemic.
I beg you, if you’re looking for a home, do not use Tucker Gardner. I’m surprised they’re still in business after all of the rules they’ve broken. Make sure you have enough in savings to not rely on your deposit being returned, you won’t see it for months, if you even see it at all. I see they’ve done this to many, many others, so this is certainly a trend.
That being said, Vinnie is a lovely member of the company. He was incredibly friendly and helpful through all of this. Vinnie mate, you deserve better than TG. Worth mentioning, I’m sure like a lot of cases, this fault was not on the actual working people in the company. Usually these issues are a company/parent company issue, most agents are just trying to pay their bills like the rest of us.
Keep track of your deposit, keep your lease and your paperwork for everything. Keep paper trails, contact via email and not over the phone. Your deposit is your legal property. I would recommend joining a tenants union if you have troubles.
