I was trying to buy a house which was listed with Manning Stainton. At first they claimed it was chain free, then they said there was only one house in the chain above.
Just one week prior to the moving date it was discovered by Ribston Pippin (an actually decent estate agent) that there was actually a huge onwards chain, and there was no chance of us moving on the agreed date.
This caused a great deal of stress as we then had to break the chain and find temporary accommodation and storage at the very last minute.
We were no longer able to proceed with purchasing this property due to the chain being so long, so we lost all the money we had spent on solicitor fees and the survey etc.
It is unfathomable that they were unaware of this chain, so they were either being purposefully deceptive or simply just completely incompetent. Either way, the service was completely disgraceful. I gave them the opportunity to financially compensate me for the great deal of cost and aggravation caused, but they refused. They claimed it wasn't their fault and that they aren't responsible for being aware of the chain. Presumably, if they compensated everyone each time they provided a terrible service they would be bankrupt.
