I was looking to buy somewhere having already sold our house, we saw a new house advertised on Rightmove, and instantly loved it, we booked a viewing through the clunky doorsteps website, it was so awful on my phone, I had to end up doing it on my laptop. (not the end of the world) I was given a few days and times to select our preferred viewing slot and we chose the soonest one offered (about 5 days time). All was going smoothly, we turned up to the viewing the vendor was lovely and helpful about the house, but she had said that there had been a number of viewings and offers before our viewing. We were shocked at the the the thought, that we might have lost out on the house before even viewing it, despite choosing the earliest date to view. Anyway we loved the house and we offered on it and it was accepted. The offer process on the doorsteps was absolutely fine. We all the paperwork was sent out straight away, which we returned the same day and the calls starting coming in about solicitor referral's, mortgage brokers etc. All great. I agreed to have a chat with their broker, despite having my own, they went onto offer me a a better deal, amazing. I checked with my broker, who is a friend of mine who subsequently sent me proof that the deal they had offered didn't exist on the open market. This didn't put us off too much, we just carried on with our broker. We sent an email into a general email address with some questions about the vendors position and the house. When I didn't get a response 2 days later, I called and was asked to send my email to another general email address, I did so. Nearly a week later, and no response I chased again to be told, "apologies the vendor is away, I will chase now for you" Aout half an hour later I got an email from "account manager advising that since out offer had been accepted a week ago, the vendor had completed a number of other viewings and the had received alternative, higher offers and was I happy to increase my offer my about £8k. Firstly I don't think this acceptable. How was the vendor away and not able to respond to my questions, but still doing viewings on her house, the house was showing as Sold stc on line, why were viewings still being carried out? The lack of personal touch or empathy from the agent was poor. Based on this, we got a horrible sour taste about this house and decided not only to decline their invite to increase our offer put actually we were going to pull our original offer too.
I am of course prepared to accept the vendor could be partly to lame for this poor service, communication and outcome. But I am confident this situation would have managed far better had it on with an high street agent. This experience has well and truly out me off buying or selling through an online agent in the future.
