My daughter rented through uni2 rent moving out of the property in August 2019. I paid the deposit, her rental and her bills.
The package was a bills inclusive package but we agreed that any under usage on bills would be refunded. Uni2 Rent at the time used OneUtility to manage the bills. What was not made clear was that OneUtility do NOT pass bills straight through, they mark them up considerably (almost 100%).
However, because my daughter and her friends used so little of their fair usage allowance they are still due a refund of £650. OneUtility took forever to issue the necessary reports to Uni2 Rent (rcvd December!) but now Uni2 appear to be backtracking on the agreement and have offered a goodwill gesture of £246, claiming that the meter readings are in dispute and it will take 6 months to sort out if we don’t accept this offer. OneUtility have told me there is no dispute.

Worse, Uni2 are now pushing bills inclusive rental houses but managing the bills themselves rather than using a bills management service, presumably so that they can take thousands of pounds potential profits from marking up the cost of utilities! Talk about ripping off a vulnerable section of society - students are already racking up huge student loan bills. This is another scam which is hidden and not properly understood.

If you are a student or the parent of a university student look in detail at what you are paying for your utilities. Your contract probably includes a fair usage allowance. Enter those numbers into an energy price comparison site and that will give you an idea of what you should be paying for utilities. Be aware that if you use less than the fair usage allowance you don’t get a refund. If you use more, they may come back to you for more money.

Our daughter is having the same nightmare trying to get back her deposit. The agent has not returned any calls, did not make arrangements to do check out inventory with tenants and have charged to carry out repairs on furniture that was damaged at the start of the tenancy, evidenced in their own photos. Report to Trading Standards via Citizen Advice Bureau like we did - they visited but need more people to report! Sad to see students still being ripped off by this speaking agency.
