We had been looking to rent an apartment when we saw this flat being advertised (24 Claire Court, Westfield Park, Hatch End) on Rightmove by Coopers Residential as being available 'immediately'. We scheduled viewings on 13th and 14th August.
Upon meeting with the Coopers agent we discovered that the flat was not in the state it was advertised.
The flat had not been cleaned and it has a big deep hole down to the foundations in the kitchen corner and one in the ceiling with pipes sticking out of the wall and cobwebs all over the place. When viewing, we asked the letting agent what was wrong with that, he assured us that it was going to be fixed before it was rented out.
Due to this assurance we decided to put in an offer for the apartment and requested the moving date of 30th August to give us enough time to move in as we had to leave our previous place by the morning of 1st September.
On a conversation with the letting agent on 27th August he told us not to worry that the flat would be cleaned and the repairs in the kitchen would be done by the time we move in. However he said at this time we could not move in as agreed on 30th August because legally it was still under another tenancy agreement. This did not give us any choice as we did not have anywhere else to live and we had to vacate our current property. This was never mentioned to us before as the apartment was advertised as available immediately.
After all reference checks came back positive, they sent us the tenancy agreement via email which had to be signed electronically. The moving in date and start of the tenancy was now the 31st August. Since we are a couple one of us received it and the other one didn't. After signing with one signature they asked us to transfer to their account one months rent and the deposit.
We had therefore arranged to pick up the keys on 31st August. After arriving at Cooper's offices, they got the second person to sign the agreement when we personally asked why the date had been moved, and they said the above mentioned reason regarding the existing tenancy.
When arriving at the property with our vehicle loaded we realised that nothing had been done to the property. This made us really unhappy as we realised we had been deceived and lied to by Coopers.
We wanted a place to live where we could feel comfortable and safe, instead we got a defective property with a big hole in the floor, where bugs and rodents could come in. There is also a concern of exposed asbestos being present.
After further inspection we realised that this is not what we had been promised and signed for so we went back to the office and returned the keys, telling them that this was not acceptable.
Due to these circumstances we became homeless, with no place to go to, and with nowhere to store our belongings.
From 1st September we are living in a hotel and out of suitcases.
