We rented a 3 bedroom house through Hamways. I personally only lived in the house for 16 months. Hamways were happy for us to have a rolling contract where each tenant just replaced themselves on moving out, therefore no one knew when the original contract started, estimated more than 5 years ago.
I found Hamways to be particularly unfriendly from the moment I began the process of moving into the house.
Throughout my tenancy it didn't get any better. I reported damp issues in the house with no response. When I chased this up I was told it wasn't an urgent issue to be dealt with, I should consider that some people don't even have water. To note that nothing was actually done about the damp for another 9 months. In fact Hamways left it so long to do anything about the damp issues we were having that when workmen came to do a superficial job in the bathroom they found they needed to replace the entire bathroom.
We had someone come to measure the very old and unstable brick wall in our garden for replacement, nothing was done about this. After nothing was done about this 9 months late, the heavy brick wall actually fell over into our neighbour's garden when were all outside, luckily for Hamways no one was injured. I reported this to Hamways who said they would send someone to repair the wall, they did send someone but they just stacked the bricks in the middle of our garden. This wall was not actually repaired until we were about to vacate the property.
In the end, one tenant handed her one month notice in to move out so Hamways told us they were increasing our rent by 20% and charging her £100 for breaking the contract. Obviously we objected to this as the house was in no state to accept a rent hike. Convenient that the rent increase came just as Hamways was obliged to fit a new bathroom (the lady from Hamways that inspected the property even agreed with us at how shoddy the work on the new bathroom was!)!
Long story short, they inspected the property and agreed that work needed to be done so they served us our section 21, the request for us to vacate the property.
I can't wait to see what they try to charge when they refurb the place.
I have never felt less supported as a tenant by an agency and would advise all tenants to steer clear wherever possible.
