From day one, moving into 5 Magdalen road, has been a complete nightmare.
Originally the house was £900pcm, until they learnt the four of us were not a family, but rather 2 couples. They immediately pushed the rent up £1000pcm. I do understand the logic behind this as we were deemed as single people.
After booking a house viewing, I was left waiting as the agent was 10 minutes late to arrive. I was shown a slightly messy house, but students were still living there and I imagine they were given little to no notice of viewings.
When we reached the final bedroom, there was drug paraphanalia littered across the room which the agent decided to ignore. I never mentioned it at the time as I liked the property.
We paid all our fees and deposits and were given a date for when we were to get the keys.
When this day arrived (and we had completely vacated our previous tenancy, rendering us technically homeless)
We were told by the house was not ready and needed paintwork of doors, skirting boards and windows. We were in pieces and had to resort to sleeping on the floor of a nearby pub owned by a friend.
Intermittently we passed be property to check progress. Nobody was there and NOTHING had been done.
We begged the landlord to let us to move in as our friend needed the room back. He told us the work was being done and any hold up was due to Pymm and Co.
We went to the Berr street branch and spoke directly to the agents, who blamed the hold up on the landlord.
Obviously, both complete lies
Eventually by June 3rd, the landlord bowed to pressure as we had become desperate.
He agreed, on the terms, that we would allow all the decorating to be done within a fortnight whilst we were in residence. We kept all furniture in the centre of the rooms to make the decorators jobs easier.
Nobody came...ever.
The house was far from perfect on arrival but we accepted that due the knowledge that both the landlord, and the agency, didn't want to spend a penny on making it better, and all of working full time, we had no opportunity to fight the cause.
Within the first few weeks, we found the attic was full of previous tennants property.
The door lock and all the metal window handles fell off.
The base board under the sink fell off due to water damage. I could see that someone had used a small amount of wood glue to try to hide this problem.
The majority of the house was riddled with black mould, despite being promised the windows would be replaced, or at the very least, we would be provided with dehumidifiers. Neither of these things happened in the 3 years we lived there.
After the first house inspection, we were blamed for the mould. We were paying £200 p/m on heating in an attempt to dry the rotting walls. We spent countless, countless amounts on mould and mildew products. Obviously this made no difference in the long run.
So every inspection, we were told the same thing, and we're even given a pamphlet on how to control mould!?
We kept arguing that we were doing EVERYTHING we could. We had bills to prove it. We were ignored.
We decided to move out due to the awful treatment.
We cleared the property of our possessions and cleaned the house by bleaching, dusting, hoovering and wiping the walls as best we could. Obviously after 3 years, some scuffs from furniture were still visible. We assumed the landlord would 'decorate' the house for the next tennants like we had been promised.
I can honesty say the house was in the same state as when we'd moved in.
We knew from the start that both the landlord and agency would try and get every single penny out of us that they could, so we took photos of the property in its entirety and made sure we updated the inventory
thoroughly to protect ourselves at the end of the tenancy.
After leaving, we were contacted by Pymm and Co and were told that the property was ''disgusting'' and that we hadn't done any cleaning at all, therefore would likely the majority of our damage deposit.
We then brought up the inventory which we received much later than usual (we literally asked 10 times for it to be sent to us. It's as if they didn't want us to be able to protect ourselves)
It proved that we'd notified them of all the damages they were trying to bill us for.
The reply was literally ''Oh''...nothing more.
We expected this as our treatment during the tenancy, had been abisimal, and obviously they would make any excuse to keep our deposit.
The final, disgusting, unbelievable insult was we were sent an image of two small perfume bottles left on the floor, as a result of carrying furniture down the stairs.
It was implied the bottles contained heroin and the landlord extremely concerned.
We have now been told that the entire house will need to cleaned by Bio specialist team as its a health and safety concern.
We were told we would HAVE TO pay for this which would take the majority of our £1500 damage deposit.
We are in shock. I have never insulted in my life. We kept the house clean and even built flower beds in the garden so to be accused of being a heroin addict is something I will not take lying down.
We immediately called Pymm and Co to querie this ridiculous claim. They reviewed the images and agreed they were obviously perfume bottles. We were offered no apology!!
Obviously both the landlord and the agency know themselves to be greedy, incompetent and ignorant and would obviously stoop that low to keep our deposit.
After being basically called an addict, the money is irrelevant but I shall be doing everything in my capacity to shed on this injustice.
I can't begin to explain how offended we are.
Avoid this company unless you're intelligent enough to not be taken advantage of.
I look forward to a responce.

Lauren Bowles
