We moved into our flat on 30th September. When we arrived the property was filthy - faeces marks in the toilet, dust everywhere. The property was also advertised as unfurnished but the previous tenants had left a load of furniture which Dexters had not removed. It took 10 days of us complaining for this to be resolved. A few days after that we reported water coming up from the drain in the shower. Our concerns were ignored and then a week later sewage, from all the flats in the building, started coming up from the shower drain into our shower. This happened on two occasions as the drain outside had become blocked, and the entire outside area was swimming in sewage - it turns out that the landlord had converted all the upstairs flats into bedsits and the extent of the sinks, toilets and washing machines were too much for the previous draining systems.
On both occasions we had to vacate the property for several days. Shortly after this, leaks started in both the kitchen and the rear bedroom. The leak in the kitchen was coming out of the fire alarm (which was connected to the mains!) and the one in the rear bedroom was trickling down the wall into the plug sockets. The plug sockets would then make crackling noises. The leak in the kitchen on one occasion caused the alarm to sound for several hours overnight when both of us had vacated the property, and the neighbours called the police who broke in to investigate the cause of the alarm.
Dexters and the landlord took FOUR MONTHS to resolve these issues, and only begun to resolve them after we involved the local Council. We asked on 3 occasions to be released from the tenancy and only received the response that Dexters had done their job and so would not release us from the tenancy unless we paid 10% of the tenancy plus VAT for the remainder of the contract. The Lettings Director of the Teddington Office, James Campbell, showed no leniency and even after getting laywers involved, still refused to terminate the tenancy. We have had an absolute nightmare at this property for 7 months and it has affected our work and social lives.
Neither me or my housemate will ever use Dexters again, and have made sure everyone we know is aware of our mistreatment. We also know several other people who have had huge issues with Dexters, including a friend who had no working shower for two months in a property rented through them.
Comment on agent fees
We should not have had to pay any fees - no inventory was taken when we moved in to the property and Dexters ignored our complaints sometimes for weeks at a time.
