Graham is indeed a liar and a throw back to the bad old days of Estate Agents as spivs and charlatans.

I was helping a friend who was leaving a joint tenancy where the relationship had broken down. The fixed term of the tenancy had expired, but the other girl had made a private arrangement with the landlord to carry on renting while my friend moved out. When approaching Graham about the refund of the deposit, instead of agreeing to release the deposit as was his actual legal obligation, he came up with the preposterous statement that because the other girl was still living in the property my friend was still liable for the rent and any delapidations on the property despite the fact she was no longer bound by any tenancy agreement.

When challenged on this he said he had spoken to his 'legal people' and this was 'British Law'.

Having spoken to a genuine legal professional on this matter, we were unsurprised, but extremely disappointed, to have confirmed, that Graham had evidently pulled this little story out of thin air hoping to intimidate my friend into ceasing to pursue the refund of her deposit - presumably because he was content to take the check out fees for my friend but not do his job, and to take fees for the new tenancy agreement but not get around to the job of re-referencing, new check-in, and lodging a new deposit with the TDS.

Unfortunately for Graham, not all of us are as vulnerable or unintelligent to the law as he thinks, and his professional history may not wear a badge of malpractice very well once genuine legal redress has concluded the matter.

In the meantime, for anyone curious about using an Uckfield letting agent, a word of advice: Graham Pope - may be branch manager of Uckfield Martin and Co, but he's usually found down the ranch hustling steers as a good ol' cowboy.
