Carter Jonas Newbury office is a typical example of what the government is about to clamp down on (hopefully heavily!). Viewed 4 flats at Newbury Racecourse in 2 days. Unfortunately Carter Jonas had the nicest one. Spoke to some other estate agents whilst viewing and they asked who else I was One agent went out his way to say “even if you don't rent from us I would pick any of the others except one with Carter Jonasâ€Â. I should have heeded this warning. Agent (Monika) was very pleasant who showed me around the property. That was where the good things ended. Upon moving into the flat the flat there was a bit of a mess around the balcony which was blamed on David Wilson Homes (DWH). Blaming DWH became a reoccurring theme and everything was labelled “snaggingâ€Â. Balcony wasn't much of an issue but then discovered hob was not working when getting ready to prepare a meal with girlfirend. In addition there were no blinds at the flat and this took a while to come in and there was no privacy. I moved in during December and it was freezing then discovered half the radiators were not working in the flat. Again this was blamed on DWH/Snagging. Then had DWH coming in and out over a period of a couple of months looking for the source of a leak in the flat downstairs. Ripped up both the balcony slabs. Unplugged washing machine and dragged hose through living room to use as a water tester. Then DWH went away for a few days and came back and said they had to rip up the wood flooring in the living room and hallway. They then proceeded to circular saw through the brick walls on the balcony. Had to Work From home regularly as CJ and Landlord were incapable of project managing and I wanted the issues resolved promptly. Flat was left in a complete mess during this period on numerous days because workers only do 9-5. Had to have a fight with DWH homes to get the radiators fixed. Turned out they had put them on the wrong way. Kept being told someone was coming but in the end had to wonder around the site looking for the head builder. Eventually someone came and drilled through the ceiling to get access and found pipes were on the wrong way. Asked for some money off both nothing forthcoming from CJ or landlord. Whilst some of the above could be labelled as snagging I was appalled with the lack of interest/management from both CJ and the landlord.
Checking out the flat was a nightmare. Despite the flat clearly not being ready and sloppy checks done by CJ/Landlord they played typical hardball on the way out which is completely absurd. Girlfriend was going to clean the flat herself but in the end we paid £200 to have it professionally cleaned. Local company called Chimney Pots (David Ferris-arrogant character as you would expect from these types) came around with a list as long as his arm. CJ/Landlord showed no appreciation of previous experience and demanded all minor issues were fixed.
Stunk of double standards across the piece with no measure of fairness or reasonable compromise. Avoid CJ at all costs. Would never use them again for any purpose. Work at local employer (Major Telco) and will be telling everyone to avoid like the plague. Hopefully new government legislation with come down on them like a ton of bricks.
Comment on agent fees
Typical extra fees for doing next to nothing.
