Pure Property charged me an illegal 'holding deposit' of £200 in order to apply for a property, and then kept the money. This is an illegal practice. When I contacted them to get the money back (with the help of Shelter's Reclaim Your Fees online toolkit) they insisted the fee wasn't illegal and gave a really weak story about having to get the money back from the owner who now lived overseas. However funnily enough when I told them I was going to take them to court for it they suddenly complied and paid me back! What a disgraceful practice, I dont know how they can not be ashamed of what they are doing. I urge anyone applying to be a tenant with them NOT to pay illegal fees, and if they need more information or support to get the fees back I would recommend Shelter Scotland's website.

Rupert, that is absolutely untrue! We do not charge any non-refundable deposit. All deposits or part deposits that any tenant or prospective tenant may pay is refundable. I don't know who you've spoken to but you have been seriously mis-informed. ...
