Terrible letting agency. We are staying whereby the properties are owned by Wellcome Trust however they will not let us have direct contact regarding the issues Touchstone have caused us. They have enforced rent increases every year, despite not actually doing any maintenance on our property to justify this increase.
They have set up a new rule which they seem to be valid although no one has accepted it nor had it in a contract to sign and agree to (it was just an email). Now they have a policy which they said if any one says they are leaving the house (shared house) that they are taking that as notice that every one will be leaving from the household. (what kind of stupid policy is this? I understand that you may have had problems with the kids or students you have put into your properties but why tarnish working professionals who are all paying rent on time and keeping a clean property with the same brush)
They try and schedule viewings whilst you are still a paying tenant in the house, which is annoying as I have found my bits and pieces all moved around and they would not be able to confirm who done that as they are scheduling multiple visits at the moment as they are getting some one in ASAP, when in fact they have said they wish to do maintenance and then move some one in. So I do not understand why these viewings need to be done whilst there are still tenants in the property and that you are not listing it up for some one to move in until the works have been completed.
They take ages to do a reference check and need prodding on that too. Says it takes a week and they charge you circa 200 for it. All they do is a credit check which can be done for free, and a work reference check. I was right next to my manager when the call was made, and this was after I had called them several times asking why hasnt this been done. Person on other end of the phone had mentioned they had started the process but I knew nothing had been done as we also have facilities here to do credit checks and can also see when a credit check has been done on some one recently.
They have asked that the property be steam cleaned and in the same state as when I moved in. I have mentioned I have moved into a room and taking over some one else's tenancy agreement. I did mention about the holes in the wall before I moved in and they said that is all fine, however now they are backtracking and saying to fix those holes it will come out of my deposit, and originally it should have been taken of the previous tenant however this was not mentioned to me prior to moving in.
In a nutshell I wouldnt use Touchstone and would avoid at all costs. They are a vile letting agency and will keep doing rental increases even if the landlord has not requested it. They will try and shaft you on your deposit so if you are already with touchstone dont pay the last months rent.
Comment on agent fees
Agency fees are not worth it - 200 to do a credit check and a reference check
experience does credit check for free, 1 phone call to your current employer does not cost more then 1 pound on the phone bill
