Avoid! -We were seriously left out of pocket by Connells in Dunstable.
The situation was that we had found a new home through Connells in Dunstable, but still had to find a buyer for our property.
We received in writing that our offer had been accepted, but we also agreed that it was only fair that the property could remain on the open market whilst we found a buyer and they would keep us informed of any interest in the property
Over a period of six weeks, we kept Connells updated on the progress of our sale and were told by Connells there had been no interest in the property we were buying.
It was not too long before we had a cash buyer on our flat, all be it £5k below what we were expecting to achieve on the sale. Mindful we did not want to lose out the property we were buying, we informed Connells immediately and asked them to stop advertising the property. We checked right move each day, expecting the property to go to Sold STC, but it did not.
On trying to contact Connells, we were flogged off with various excuses such as the person we needed to speak too was not available, or there was no one around who could assist.
Several days later, however when we contacted the office and asked to speak to the Manager, we were informed that the house had been sold but not to us!!!
We were told that there was going to be an investigation into what had happened, but no one has properly ever reported back to us, with eventually being told the agent dealing with the house had been too frightened to tell us!
Furthermore, we eventually found out that the new purchaser of the property had sold their property also through Connells and needed a property to move into. Something to be Gazumped by a buyer, but where this has been put into place by the Agent of the seller is something we had not been aware could happen!
We have now started the process of purchasing another property in the area but are now £5,000 out of pocket thanks to the actions of Connells.
In our search for other properties, we have listened to other sellers in the area, and sadly our experiences of Connells do not seem unusual more to the point they seem normal.
I should also like to advise people, there is a big sell on mortgage brokering through them, with ourselves having to give the same financial information several times.
Their practices and methods in selling Mortgage brokering seem extremely unethical if not illegal. So please take care if you are considering using the discounts offered or agreeing a price which refers to the brokering service!
