I was interested in viewing several properties with the Lettings team. Everything was progressing smoothly, and I gave my details. However, upon finding out I was a student (fourth year), the agent balked and told me that they wouldn't be able to rent to me. When I inquired why this was, and she told me I needed to either to be in full-time employment, or have a student loan. I noted that as an international student (I'm Canadian), my parents covered my rent, and would be willing to act as guarantors/co-leasers and undergo all the checks required; I also noted that they would be willing to provide 3 months rent upfront if any landlords needed assurances. I was told this was not possible, even if I were to provide the above + references from my two previous letting agencies (one of which was in Bournemouth and who I was with for two years as a model tenant); I've never missed rent with either.
This type of policy is a detriment to their company, as its inflexibility in any circumstance deprives landlords of prospective tenants. It should also be noted that this conversation with the lettings office took place over a week. I originally called on Monday, and had my name taken. It took another two calls to get an initial response, and then another three calls (over two days) to speak to someone again despite my name being taken and call back promised.
Note: I also spoke to their Poole office, who were lovely, and had no such qualms when given the same information.
