My partner and I have dealt with the Cj Hole branch located in Southville and had problems since the first day. First the agent who was responsible for the property we were interested in said that the tenancy term could be 6 months (we asked him as soon as they called us back after viewing the flat because that was the term we were looking for) so we agreed and paid £598 for a holding deposit. After they had received the money they contacted me again to say that the landlord was only interested in a 12 months contract, even though they had already told me that there was no problem with a 6 months tenancy term. We insisted that we would like a 6 months contract so they said to me they would contact the landlord and let us know. They never called me back so I had to call them several times for a few days in order to find out what was going to happen with our deposit and our tenancy. Finally, they replied saying that the landlord only wanted a 12 months term, as we were worried about the deposit we had already paid we asked the agent if in case we had to leave the property before the year was complete they would release us from the tenancy with the only consequence of keeping the security deposit and they said YES.
Later on they sent us the tenancy application form and we contact them to ask a few questions, among them whether we had a deadline to send back that application or not and they said the only form that had to be filled in 48 hours was the referencing one.
So, two days after that call and after dealing with some issues that would affect our tenancy, besides reading carefully all the points, agreements and consequences included in the application we called them back to say we could not sign the tenancy application form, but our agent was not available at that moment so they said he would call me later, but he did not. The following day I called again, because they had not contacted me and the person on the phone told me that my agent was on holidays but another agent was now dealing with the property. So after telling him about our situation he said that we would not get our deposit back, even though I told him that the other agent had said to me that in case we did not get the flat we would get the money back. At the end he said he would speak to the accounting department to ask them and he would call me back, but he did not so after waiting the all day and the following morning I called him and he replied that the account manager was out of the office that day so he would call me back with an answer the next day. As he did not contact me I had to call him again and he said that the account manager had been very busy and the department was already closed so it would have to wait until the next day and again he would contact me and again he did not so I called him the following day and someone from the office told me that the agent was out of the office so he would call me back as soon as he returned but again, he did not. As the next day was Sunday they were closed so I waited until Monday to call them, this time they told me that the agent was out of the office again. The following day, Tuesday, I called again and the person on the phone said again that the agent was not available so he asked me if I wanted to leave a message that he would send to all the agents in the office so I left the message but remarked that I needed to talk to this particular agent because I had been trying to get an answer from him for nearly a week.
Finally, I managed to contact him the following day, Wednesday, and he insisted we could not get our deposit back because the landlord had spent all the money doing some work inside the flat and painting it. I said to him that we did not have anything to do with that since we had not even signed the tenancy application form yet, to which he replied that we had asked the landlord to do all that work through another form. As we have NEVER filled out any form asking him to do anything I was really shocked when I heard that our money had been spent in something that has nothing to do with us. The agent just made up that we had filled in a form that has never existed and we have never seen. What is more, he added that our money had gone because they had been dealing with our referencing forms which cannot be possible since we did not sign the application form in first place so they do not have the details to start that procedure. I kept insisting that we had not signed any form and he apologized but kept saying that we could not recover the money, although before he hang up he said he would contact the accounting department to see if we could get some of the money back and he would let me know...
Today is Thursday and as we expected the agent has not contacted us so we have decided to go one step forwards writing this complain.
Obviously, after having this horrible experience with the agency we won't recommend it to anybody. They lied to us from the beginning and we had to be chasing them all the time in order to get any piece of information about the situation.
