Renting with Elkay was a very frustrating experience. To begin with we signed a new contract in 2014 with the company who then charged every person £90 for reference check resulting in a £60 charge. 2 people had been at the property 6 months prior, but not on the contract, therefore a new contract was drawn up as everyone willing to sign the contract were new to the property. We then renewed after 6 months, the updated contracted which we were sent a copy of was EXACTLY the same as the previous contract we had signed, whoever admined this obviously was so incompetent that they could not even change the dates of the contract, no fee was ever mentioned or in the contract (So that was £60 well spent). then the problems started once it came to sign out, the state of the itinerary was something to be desired. One tenant was at the property for sign in and pointed out any discrepancies (though they felt it necessary to use a document dated 2011 and updated with these problems as a comparison with the 2015 check out) , We as contractually obliged had the property professionally cleaned upon leaving. They went through the property with a tooth comb and took coloured detailed photos of everything. SO PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU TAKE COLOURED PHOTOS WHEN YOU CHECK IN AND REPORT EVERYTHING TO THEM, BASICALLY DO THEIR JOB FOR THEM. A lengthy back and forth ensued, we had to deal with Mary in particular who was again incompetent in her responses. They tried to claim back money for a fridge freezer that had been in the property for a number of years prior to when we had taken over the tenancy as well as for painting some walls, also accusing us of drilling holes into walls (we never had any need to do this let alone had a drill). We were then passed on to Patrick who felt it necessary to rudely respond to one tenant. With all the back and forth it took us 3 weeks to get our deposit back even then we had to accept a £260 deduction, which was completely unnecessary, we were basically charged by them for previous years wear and tear. If they had properly signed out the last few sets of tenants then this problem could have been avoided, over the years it seems the companys failure to carry out any needed repair work and to replace items that were years old and falling apart. So in short, DO NOT bother using this company they are a cowboy outfit and horrible to deal with.
