Riding my motorbike through Coventry yesterday I stopped at a junction and saw the smiling face of one Brendan Pettigrew looking back at me from a ¢â‚¬ËœFor Sale' sign in the front garden of a house. Distracting me a second from the job in hand it reminded me that going back several months when a sold my house I had fully intended writing to Newman's to thank them for the service I had received. Surrounded by packing boxes and all the other rubbish I maybe shouldn't have taken with me I simply forgot but today ¢â‚¬â€œ I'll put that right!
Last year I decided to sell a house that I had been renting and chose as the agents a long term local company whose reputation was for old style value and service. Unfortunately whist the initial valuation and set up was as I had hoped for the service after that was a case of ¢â‚¬ËœLove it' or hate it; I hated it.
What I needed and wanted was an enthusiasm for my property not just from the potential buyer but from the people selling it and not the oh it will sell eventually attitude. What I wanted was regular feedback so that I knew what was going on and not the only feedback you really need is to know is it has been sold' attitude. What I needed was more than just one person knowing about my house, just in case the one person wasn't available when that all important call came in. What I wanted was someone who was prepared to go out when the customer wanted to go to the house not when it suited the agent. What I wanted was the service that I was given to be at least something close to that which was promised at the beginning. So what it turns out I wanted was Newman's ¢â‚¬â€œ albeit I didn't realise it at the time.
There is a risk of waffling here so I will cut to the chase. Three and a half months my property was on sale with the other agent, maybe a dozen viewings (but maybe less as rarely did I get feedback to say they turned up) but then the switch to Newman's and without any exaggeration 16 viewings in 4 days and 3 offers; the asking price being exceeded by £15K and the sale going through without a hitch.
Now I appreciate that this won't be the case for every property but what I can say without any fear of contradiction (based on my own experience) is that what Brendan said he would deliver he did. Where there was information to be passed to me he did. When he wasn't available someone stepped in to keep me posted and when the sale went through it almost happened in the background in that everything was sorted for me. His approach may at first (or at least it did to me) seem to be a bit flashy (I mean he had the roof of his convertible open and the air conditioning on!) but that I think is probably the new style, the hunger to make it work, the enthusiasm that, let's face it, you need if you're selling an expensive item like a house.
I'm not really from the PowerPoint hi tech generation with glossy on screen brochures and animated house tours etc etc but there again, it wasn't designed for me it was for the potential buyer and it worked.
So would I recommend Newman's as agents for someone selling a property. Yes, without any doubt and before anyone asks, no he's not a mate - I haven't seen or heard from him since the contract was completed. He came, he delivered and he moved on to the next one.
Many thanks
