When viewing our prospective flat with the Carlton Lettings Agent, Jonathan, we continually expressed our desire to take the property for a long lease. For example, we asked if the landlord would consider removing some of the furniture so we could replace with our own, and he implied that they may be open to it. We made an offer, and the landlord said they had nowhere to store the items. They also offered to continue to pay for the tv license, Sky and internet. After we moved in we discovered that all of their belongings had been stored in the coal hole under the stairs.
After exactly six months to the day we received our notice to vacate the premises. It was only then that it became clear that the landlord, and Carlton, had planned to let the property to us for the maximum eight months as per our contract.
While I understand that the landlord has the legal right to serve notice after six months, it is totally immoral to market this flat without informing prospective tenants that they will be asked to leave within a year! Our neighbours then told us that the same thing had happened to the previous tenant.
I will be telling anyone who cares to listen to steer well clear of these people, they are the reason that Estate Agents have the reputation that they do.
What agent could do to change your mind?
Be honest in the first place, explain that the landlord spends half the year abroad and this property would be ideal for anyone looking to rent for less than a year. NOT trick people into relocating their lives into a nice flat only to rip the rug out from under them at the earliest opportunity.

Expensive, but industry standard.
