I recently spent 1 year as a tenant in Slough, with Buxtons Estates as my estate agent. The house was in a great area, not too far to work, so I thought it would be ideal for me. Sadly, the problems started as soon as I walked through the door. The house was filthy. It was obvious that building work had been recently done, as there was builders dust all over the house. The Kitchen was by far the worst room in the house, with every cupboard covered in a layer of grease that felt like every surface had been used to cook a fried breakfast weeks ago. It was disgusting and horrid. But, as my room mates and I were desperate for accommodation, we moved in regardless. In celebration of our new house, we decided on that first night to cook some pizzas that we had bought from the local supermarket. This was the start of the second in a long list of issues we had with the estate agents. The oven did not work. We luckily made friends with the neighbours, who kindly offered to cook our pizzas for us, and the following morning we contacted the agents (previously called Letting Angels, horribly ironically) to let them know that the hobs worked, but the oven did not. And as a working oven was mentioned in the contract, we assumed that it would be sorted pretty quickly. How wrong we were. One month passed before any action was seen at all on the matter, with several phone calls going unanswered. Towards the end of that month, we gave a hollow threat to not pay rent until the oven had been fixed. Unsurprisingly, at the threat of no money, suddenly they cared again. 'We have gotten in contact with the landlord (Wow, in only a month that is damn impressive) and he says that unless we pay rent, he will not install the oven.' We paid the rent, and waited. Waited yet another month of unanswered phone calls. Then, after yet another empty threat of no rent payment, and a mention of the contract containing a working oven in it, finally the oven was installed only two and a bit months after moving in. We decided as a house to just continue on our merry way, only involving the estate agents or landlord if totally necessary. The winter weather, however, brought us the next two issues of our tenure. As is tradition at winter time, the boiler broke, so we didn't have any heating. To the credit of the estate agents, they actually responded to our call fairly quickly this time, sending out a wonderfully helpful man who diagnosed the issue as being some circuit board. He said he would let the agents and landlord know that it would cost ƒâ€š‚£60 or so. They refused to pay this amount, and moved for another plumber a few weeks later. They also concluded the same issue, but quoted a higher price. This was also refused. A final plumber was called, and he thought it was the pump, quoting a lower price. He got the part, then found out he was wrong. Long story short... we went over a month in the winter without heating, despite several chances for that to be rectified. The wind of the winter also knocked over the fence in the garden, which sparked an argument with the neighbours over the ownership. When we talked to the neighbours, they said this had happened before, and the fence was certainly our landlord's responsibility. But, for over 5 months, we had a huge hole in our fence. As I have now moved out, I cannot say for certain that the issue has even been resolved. About two months into the tenancy, we asked for permission to install a shower in the middle bathroom. We were approved, and carried out the tiling work (professional job) and installed a proper shower unit. considering that, and the fact that when we finally left our house, it was cleaner than we got it, the estate agents still insisted on removing money from our deposit. I had a wonderful year, and they tried their best to ruin it. I know estate agents are generally money grabbers, but they really took the cake too. Please, avoid any contact with these people, or they will avoid contact with you when you need them most.
