The electricity in the flat was pre pay meter, only you had to go to Karen to get the cards as only she sold them! So basically when she decides to leave work early on a friday and you need electricity as it is going to go, you either have to do without or travel miles away to her home to buy it from her. Even though she has a car she wouldn't really be bothered coming down to give you it. She'd rather you sit there with no electric until shes back in the office on Monday.
