Last November we rented a £725/m bungalow through Blundells Letting Agency in Sheffield. First of all they charged us over £200 for reference checks that cost £25 online, plus two emails sent, one to my old landlord, the other to my employer. That is surely not £175 worth of work?
In terms of problems with the actual tenancy, in December the boiler, which was situated outside, froze and led to burst pipes in the loft, which flooded the house. Blundells were happy to leave us in a freezing house over Christmas without compensation, there was no rent reduction and we had to stay with friends. The agency were very rude and aggressive over this issue. It was -17 degrees C at one point so I'm not exaggerating about being 'freezing'!
Then the dishwasher broke in February, and Blundells informed the landlords and did nothing further to help. The landlord didn't do anything about as he'd 'rather not spend money on the house' it so we were left without a dishwasher for the remainder of the tenancy.
Finally we realised this was a bad place to be and with no agency support we gave our notice to leave in May 2011. Then our deposit was not returned because Blundells couldn't 'get hold of' the landlords, who had gone on holiday for an indeterminate amount of time. It has been a month and we are still waiting for a response about the deposit, the deposit scheme say 'their hands are tied in the event of the landlord not responding' and this could drag on for months.
In sum I found Blundells a poor agency to go with, and will avoid them in future.
