Although many different references to the name have been found over the centuries including Martin, Martelai, Marteley, or just Martel. Lower Bank Cottage is also steeped in history, originally part of the Glebe Estate of the Benefice of Martley where it was once called 'Lower Scar" a name that could have been a reference to the bare rock faces that were typical of the vicinity left by earlier quarrying but could have been as a result from the deep cutting in a neighbouring road. The name was changed in 1973 to 'Lower Bank Cottage'. The original timber framed cottage is between 300-350 years old so there are many glorious original features throughout including exposed beams and an original bread oven in the snug.
